Exceptional pieces still attract strong bidding, but sellers hoping to capitalize on peak pricing must remain realistic about current collector sentiment.

Tonight’s auction turns to one of Audemars Piguet’s strongest modern sports watches: the 2023 Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph 43 in stainless steel and black ceramic with the increasingly popular smoked taupe dial (Ref. 26420SO.OO.A600CA.01).

Auction Report: A Rare Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar Heads to the Block

Yesterday’s featured auction concluded without a sale after the 2025 Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Complete Calendar Openface in white gold attracted bidding to $40,000, falling short of the seller’s reserve. While the skeletonized dial and complete calendar complication generated interest, bidders ultimately proved unwilling to bridge the gap to the seller’s expectations, underscoring the continued selectivity at the upper end of today’s pre-owned market.

Today’s featured auction shifts to one of modern German watchmaking’s finest achievements: the 2023 A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar in white gold with its striking pink gold dial (Ref. 345.056). Introduced in 2021 and produced as a limited edition of just 150 pieces, the watch represents the first perpetual calendar ever built around Lange’s asymmetrical Lange 1 dial architecture. Rather than compromise the iconic display, Lange engineered an entirely new movement—the automatic Calibre L021.3—to integrate a perpetual calendar while preserving the collection’s unmistakable design. The result is widely regarded as one of the most elegant perpetual calendars produced in the modern era.

The 41.9 mm white gold case houses an exquisitely finished movement featuring a platinum micro-rotor, instantaneous calendar switching, a peripheral month ring, oversized date, moonphase and a remarkable 50-hour power reserve. Like virtually every Lange movement, the calibre is assembled twice, with hand-engraved balance cock, untreated German silver bridges and extraordinary hand finishing throughout.

Originally retailing at approximately $116,000, demand has remained exceptionally strong thanks to the watch’s limited production and broad collector appeal. Recent private market activity has generally placed examples between $120,000 and $145,000, with complete full-set watches commanding the strongest premiums. The example offered today includes its original box, papers, folio and factory deployant clasp, making it particularly attractive to serious collectors.

Whether bidding reaches those levels remains to be seen, but today’s auction represents an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire one of A. Lange & Söhne’s most important modern complicated watches outside the traditional boutique network.

A bid approaching $80,000 is hardly evidence of a weak market—it’s evidence that sellers continue to believe the best examples deserve more. Whether buyers agree is another matter, but the gap between bids and reserves has narrowed considerably over the past year.

Those accessories matter because complicated Vacheron Constantins tend to attract knowledgeable buyers who appreciate completeness almost as much as condition.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this watch today is its value proposition. Originally introduced around the high-$40,000 range and now carrying a retail price of roughly $60,000, secondary-market pricing has softened considerably, with many examples changing hands well below retail. For collectors willing to move beyond the usual steel sports watch conversation, that creates an unusual opportunity. Comparable finishing from the traditional “Holy Trinity” rarely comes at such a discount.

This is not the watch for someone seeking instant recognition across a restaurant. It is the watch for someone who already owns the obvious pieces and wants something that reveals itself slowly. Every glance uncovers another layer of engineering, another polished bevel, another reason Vacheron Constantin has survived nearly three centuries while so many competitors have disappeared.

Time Graphing Today’s Watch Universe

Some days the watch industry feels like a collection of unrelated product launches. Other days, a common thread emerges almost immediately. Today is one of those days.

Across nearly every major story, the industry finds itself balancing two competing forces: confidence in its heritage and uncertainty about its future. The watches themselves have rarely looked stronger. The business surrounding them has rarely looked more complicated.

That contrast begins with the day’s biggest business story. Watches of Switzerland’s decision to abandon its £3 billion sales target⁠ is more than a retailer adjusting a forecast. It is another reminder that the extraordinary growth assumptions made during and immediately after the pandemic have largely disappeared. Back then, it seemed reasonable to believe that luxury demand would continue climbing almost indefinitely. Today, the market is behaving much more like a mature business. Growth still exists, but it has become selective, measured and increasingly dependent on execution rather than momentum.

Ironically, none of that caution appears to have reached the watchmakers themselves.

If anything, brands continue to invest even more heavily in technical achievement and storytelling. No manufacturer illustrates that better today than Breguet⁠, which dominates this issue from nearly every direction. Celebrating the 225th anniversary of Abraham-Louis Breguet’s invention of the tourbillon, the company didn’t simply release another commemorative watch. It unveiled an entire collection built around one of the most important inventions in mechanical watchmaking, then followed it with an elegant new 35mm Classique Tourbillon that demonstrates the remarkable confidence only true heritage brands possess. Few companies can spend an entire product cycle celebrating something they invented more than two centuries ago. Even fewer can do it without sounding nostalgic.

That confidence extends beyond Breguet. Cartier’s Watchmaking Prize⁠ reminds us that preserving traditional watchmaking requires more than museums and archives. It requires new watchmakers. The unsuccessful auction reinforces what we’ve been seeing for months: buyers are still spending, but they’re becoming far more selective. For collectors willing to step outside the usual Daytona, Royal Oak and Nautilus conversation, the Malte Chronograph remains one of modern horology’s most compelling values.

Auction Report: The Aquanaut That Refuses To Go Out Of Style

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut Ref. 5167A-001 has evolved from the Nautilus’ overlooked sibling into one of the defining luxury sports watches of the modern era. This 2021 example arrives with its original box, papers and literature, presenting in excellent overall condition with only light signs of wear.

The 5167 refined the original Aquanaut formula with slimmer proportions, a more comfortable composite strap and the self-winding Caliber 324 SC. While speculative pricing has cooled considerably since 2022, complete examples continue to command healthy premiums over retail because demand remains rooted in genuine enthusiasm rather than short-term flipping.

Assuming condition matches the listing, this example should attract strong collector interest. My expectation is that bidding will settle somewhere in the low-to-mid $60,000 range—fair market value for one of Patek Philippe’s most enduring contemporary sports watches.

A Forgotten Masterpiece — The Vacheron Constantin Malte Chronograph Deserves Another Look

Some watches quietly disappear from collector conversations not because they lack quality, but because fashions simply move elsewhere. The Vacheron Constantin Malte Chronograph Ref. 47120/000G-9098 is one of those rare opportunities.

Inside beats the magnificent Caliber 1141, descended from the legendary Lemania 2310 architecture and finished to Vacheron Constantin standards worthy of the Geneva Seal era. Few manual chronograph movements enjoy a pedigree this distinguished.

The elegant 41.5mm white-gold case, silvered dial and bold Arabic numerals give the Malte its own personality—less formal than a Patrimony but every bit as refined. Originally retailing around $41,500, today’s examples generally trade well below that figure, making the Malte one of the more overlooked values among Holy Trinity chronographs.

This example lacks its original box and papers, but otherwise presents well, with only minor wear and an excellent dial and crystal. For collectors who buy the watch rather than the packaging, that may create an opportunity.

The auction closes tonight at 7:05 p.m. EDT on Bezel. If bidding remains comfortably below current retail replacement values, this could become one of the most interesting buys we’ve featured in recent weeks.

Time Graphing Today’s Watch Universe

One of the advantages of publishing a daily watch newsletter is that you begin to notice patterns long before they become obvious. Individual stories are interesting. Together, they tell you where the industry is going.

Today’s issue isn’t really about museums, fashion, auctions or new releases. It’s about something bigger.

It’s about watches becoming part of culture again.

For years, much of the conversation surrounding watch collecting revolved around scarcity. Waiting lists. Investment returns. Secondary-market premiums. Social media hype. Somewhere along the way, many people stopped talking about why watches mattered in the first place.

Today’s lead story about Rolex⁠ and the National Geographic Museum of Exploration reminds us exactly why they do.

Rolex didn’t simply donate money to a museum. It reinforced a relationship with exploration that stretches back generations. Visitors won’t leave talking about reference numbers or movement specifications. They’ll remember Jacques Cousteau, Sylvia Earle, mountain climbers, deep-sea expeditions and the people who relied on mechanical watches in places where failure wasn’t an option. That’s branding that isn’t built with advertising. It’s built over decades of consistently showing up where history is being made.

At almost the opposite end of the spectrum sits Ralph Lauren⁠.

Its Milan runway wasn’t trying to celebrate exploration. It was celebrating style. Yet the message was equally important. Watches were no longer accessories added at the last minute—they were central to the look itself. Sleeves were rolled back to frame them. They became part of the story being told on the runway.

That may seem like a small detail, but I don’t think it is.

Collectors sometimes forget that an entirely new generation isn’t entering this hobby through auction catalogs or vintage forums. They’re discovering watches through fashion, music, sports and social media. They’re buying pieces that complement how they dress long before they start debating escapements and balance springs. Eventually many of those buyers become collectors. Every hobby needs new front doors, and fashion has become one of watchmaking’s most effective.

Then reality enters the picture.

Our feature on rising watch prices⁠ highlights a challenge facing every collector today. Gold is expensive. Currency swings continue to pressure Swiss manufacturers. Production costs haven’t become any cheaper. Those are legitimate business realities, but they’re also creating an unintended consequence: the secondary market keeps looking more attractive.

I don’t think that’s bad news.

Yesterday’s A. Lange & Söhne auction on Bezel may have been the best example of the day. A superb Lange 1 Time Zone attracted serious bidding before falling short of its reserve. A few years ago buyers might have chased it simply because they feared another opportunity wouldn’t come along. Today’s collectors are behaving differently. They’re studying values. They’re setting limits. Most importantly, they’re becoming comfortable walking away.

Healthy markets require disciplined buyers.

That discipline also creates opportunities for patient ones.

The new watches in today’s issue reinforce another trend I’ve been watching all year. There is no longer one definition of what makes a great watch. Grand Seiko⁠ continues chasing extraordinary precision. Jaeger-LeCoultre⁠improves an already excellent sports watch by making it more wearable. De Bethune⁠ continues producing mechanical art that few others would even attempt. Timex⁠ reminds us that watches can still be playful, nostalgic and affordable.

None of those companies are competing for the same customer.

And that’s exactly the point.

The watch industry is no longer moving in one direction. Museums are preserving its history. Fashion is embracing its relevance. Independent brands continue pushing creativity. Auctions are restoring pricing discipline. Mainstream manufacturers are quietly delivering some of the best values they’ve offered in years.

For collectors, that’s an encouraging combination.

I’ve always believed that the best watch collections aren’t built by chasing whatever everyone else wants. They’re assembled slowly, with patience, curiosity and enough confidence to appreciate great watchmaking wherever it appears. Markets will rise and fall. Trends will come and go. The watches that remain meaningful are usually the ones that spoke to us long before they impressed everyone else.

If today’s issue has a common thread, it’s this: the healthiest watch industry isn’t the one producing the most expensive watches. It’s the one producing the most reasons to care about them.

The white-gold case and black dial give this reference a contemporary personality while preserving the extraordinary finishing collectors expect from Glashütte.

For buyers, patience continues to be rewarded. For sellers, even outstanding watches now have to meet the market before they change hands.

There is an unmistakable shift taking place in the watch world. After years of manufacturers focusing almost exclusively on the next steel sports watch or another limited-edition dial color, the conversation is becoming broader. Heritage is becoming more valuable than hype. Experiences are becoming as important as products. Even clocks—yes, clocks—are suddenly fashionable again.

The biggest industry news comes from Breitling⁠, whose House of Brands will officially join Watches & Wonders Geneva beginning in 2027. That means Breitling, Universal Genève, Gallet and Damiani will finally stand alongside Rolex, Patek Philippe, Cartier and the Richemont maisons at what has become the industry’s unquestioned flagship event. Combined with the launch of Basilia⁠ during the same week, April 2027 now promises to become the busiest week on the global horological calendar in decades.

At the same time, Tudor⁠ quietly demonstrated how luxury brands can build loyalty without launching another watch. Instead, it invited collectors into its Geneva headquarters to study military-issued Submariners, prototypes and archival material alongside the people responsible for preserving the brand’s history. There were no velvet ropes, no marketing presentations and very little salesmanship. Just watches, scholarship and conversation. In an industry increasingly built around community, Tudor may have delivered one of the smartest marketing exercises of the year by making it barely feel like marketing at all.

Perhaps the most unexpected trend of the summer is the return of the desk clock. Timex⁠ introduced its handsome Waterbury America 250 Table Clock, joining an increasingly long list of manufacturers rediscovering decorative horology for homes and offices. Whether this becomes a genuine category revival remains to be seen, but after several years dominated by wristwatches alone, it’s refreshing to see companies exploring other expressions of mechanical—and quartz—timekeeping.

For enthusiasts planning future travel, Basilia⁠ also provided its first substantial look at what a post-Baselworld exhibition could become. Rather than recreating the massive trade show of the past, organizers envision neighborhoods of brands spread across Basel in a format designed to encourage discovery instead of exclusivity. If successful, the industry may soon have two complementary European destinations each spring instead of one dominant event.

Today’s new releases offer something for virtually every collector. Amida⁠ continues reviving one of the 1970s’ most unusual digital mechanical designs with the luminous Digitrend OSII Black. Arnold & Son⁠ delivers stunning moon-phase artistry with its three-piece “Colours of the Moon” collection. Citizen⁠ proves high-end quartz remains alive and well with its remarkably accurate Indigo Washi perpetual calendar, while Seiko⁠ celebrates Japanese textile heritage through silk-inspired Presage dials. Lange Distance: A White-Gold Lange 1 Time Zone Heads to Bezel

Last night’s Bezel auction for the 2012 Breguet Classique Hora Mundi 5717BR/US/9ZU ended with a high bid of $25,600, but the watch did not meet reserve. That is not especially shocking. The Hora Mundi is one of Breguet’s more technically clever modern travel watches, and this rose-gold America edition has plenty of charm, but the market has never treated it with the same warmth that collectors reserve for simpler, more instantly recognizable Breguet classics. At $25,600, bidders were clearly interested. The seller, apparently, was not interested enough.

Tonight’s Bezel auction moves from Parisian flourish to Glashütte discipline with a 2021 A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Time Zone in white gold with a black dial, reference 136.029. The auction ends tonight (Wednesday, June 24, 2026 at 11:05 p.m. EDT).

This is the second-generation Lange 1 Time Zone, introduced in 2020, and it is a meaningful update to one of Lange’s most useful complications. The original Lange 1 Time Zone arrived in 2005, taking the asymmetrical Lange 1 layout and turning it into a serious travel watch without ruining the design. The 136.029 keeps the 41.9mm case size but adds the newer manually wound L141.1 caliber, a cleaner display architecture, improved day/night indicators, and the familiar city-ring system for tracking a second time zone.

The watch is white gold, but in typical Lange fashion it does not shout about it. The black solid-silver dial gives the piece a formal, almost architectural presence, while the oversized date, twin time displays, power reserve, and city ring keep it from becoming just another expensive dress watch pretending to be simple. This is a complicated watch, but it wears its complication with German restraint rather than Swiss theater.

This example is listed as a 2021 watch with box, papers, product literature, and extra straps. The dial, hands, and crystal are described as excellent, with minor signs of wear on the case, bezel, and bracelet. That is the correct profile for a wearable Lange: not sealed-away speculation, not battered, but used enough that the next owner can actually enjoy it without treating every desk edge like a legal threat.

The value picture is fairly clear. The current U.S. retail reference point for the Lange 1 Time Zone sits around the low-$60,000 range, while comparable pre-owned examples tend to cluster in the low-to-mid $40,000s, with some asking prices pushing closer to $50,000 depending on condition, completeness, dealer reputation, and patience. For this full-set 2021 white-gold example, the market probably starts to make sense somewhere in the low $40,000s and becomes increasingly selective as it moves toward the upper $40,000s.

The appeal here is not hype. It is not scarcity theater. It is not one more integrated-bracelet sports watch trying to convince the room that steel is the new platinum. The Lange 1 Time Zone 136.029 is a serious travel complication from one of the great modern haute horlogerie houses, wrapped in a design language that has been central to Lange since the brand’s 1994 revival. It is useful, beautiful, expensive, and slightly severe, which is exactly the point.

For collectors who want a Lange that does more than sit politely under a cuff, this is one of the stronger choices in the catalog. The only real question is price. Buy it well, and it is one of the great modern travel watches. Chase it too high, and you are simply paying retail-adjacent money for the privilege of owning restraint.
