The auction closes at 12:00 p.m. EDT on Friday, August 21. Watch the final bidding closely: it will test whether buyers treat the Pioneer Flying Hours as a compelling alternative to the familiar luxury-sports formula, or as a brilliant niche complication that still needs the right audience.

That’s 54.9% below ask, with the best bid reaching only 45.1% of the seller’s expectation. In other words, the market did not merely negotiate; it suggested the asking price may have been auditioning for a different room.

The 2025 Rolex Lady-Datejust was listed at $57,895 and received a high bid of $20,000, missing by $37,895. That is 65.5% below ask, or just 34.5% of the requested price. The bracelet may be presidential, but the bidding public voted with a distinctly non-presidential budget.

The conclusion: both reserves appear materially ahead of current buyer appetite, but the Rolex is the clearer mismatch. A failed sale at roughly 45% of ask can indicate a wide valuation gap or a very selective buyer pool; a bid at 34.5% of ask signals that the reserve was likely disconnected from where active demand is actually trading. Unless these pieces have compelling provenance, condition, or dealer-level retail positioning not reflected in the listings, more realistic reserves—or a private-sale strategy—would be needed to convert interest into a sale.

The 2024 Rolex Sky-Dweller 42MM Blue Dial Rose Gold (336935) asked $61,500 and received a high bid of $45,150. That is $16,350 short, or 26.6% below ask. Bidders were willing to pay 73.4% of the target—respectable interest, just not enough enthusiasm to call it a sale.

Together, the two pieces were priced at $157,000 and drew $108,483 in bids, a combined gap of $48,517 (30.9%). The takeaway: both asks appear to have been materially ahead of the bidding market, with the Day-Date facing the larger disconnect. The Sky-Dweller was closer and may have had a viable path with a more flexible reserve; the Day-Date likely needed a more substantial reality check.

Two failed sales, two very firm market responses: nice try.

The 2022 F.P. Journe Octa Chronomètre Optimum was offered at $386,000 and reached just $175,000—a $211,000 shortfall, or 54.7% below ask. In other words, the market showed up with a bid, then declined to participate in the seller’s alternate reality. For a Journe, that is a particularly loud miss: the bid was only 45.3% of the asking price.

There may be some smoke here. Recent watch-market videos have suggested that parts of the F.P. Journe market are retreating, and this result certainly does not argue the other side. That said, one unsold modern example is not a whole-market index—especially as top-tier Journe auction results remain strong—so the cleaner conclusion is that buyers are becoming much more selective about model, configuration, and price. Phillips’ recent market view supports the idea that the broader brand market is more nuanced than a single result.

The 2025 Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Xiali Chinese Calendar fared even less charitably. Against a $60,348 ask, its $21,000 high bid missed by $39,348, or 65.2% below ask. The listed delta of -$39,348. Beautiful, unusual, and apparently still not enough to persuade bidders that “Imperial” should apply to the price.

The takeaway: both reserves were set as aspirations rather than market-clearing numbers. The Journe result is the more meaningful warning sign because it tests an exceptionally hot independent brand; the Parmigiani result is a reminder that rarity and complication do not automatically produce liquidity. In this room, buyers were willing to admire both watches—just not to finance the seller’s optimism.

It launched at roughly $47,300 before tax in the United States and later carried a $60,000 list price; current full-set dealer offerings have clustered around the low-to-mid-$40,000 range. Its closest public auction cousin, the white-gold 4020T/000G-B655, sold for $32,408 in Hong Kong in April. In that context, the $30,501 bid is not a dismissal of the watch so much as a sober read on a thinly traded, precious-metal dress complication.

That is also what makes Vacheron Constantin distinctive. Founded in 1755, the Geneva maison is one of the rare grand houses that can credibly span restrained dress watches, avant-garde openworked pieces, integrated-bracelet sports watches, and serious high complications while maintaining the Hallmark of Geneva on models such as these. The result suggests that the market still respects the object, but it will not automatically pay retail-adjacent money simply for pedigree, gold, or complexity. For a clean, complete example, bidding in the low thirties looks like value-led interest; a seller seeking a stronger number will need patience, the right audience, and a presentation that makes the Openface’s finishing and unusual dial architecture impossible to miss.

Today’s August 14 offering (above) is the 2024 Vacheron Constantin Overseas Moon Phase Retrograde Date, reference 4000V/210A-B911, a much more liquid proposition. Introduced in 2023, the 41 mm steel Overseas blends a blue lacquer dial, precision moonphase, and the maison’s signature retrograde date with the practical appeal of the interchangeable steel bracelet, leather strap, and rubber strap. This full-set example has its box, papers, literature, hangtags, extra straps, and all pictured bracelet links, with excellent dial, hands, and crystal and only minor wear to case, bezel, and bracelet. Public evidence points to a $31,647 auction result for a 2024 example in October 2024, while a later full-set dealer sale reached $48,900; more recent market offerings have generally sat around the mid-$40,000s against a retail price near $52,500. With its complete accessories and strong condition, a result in the upper-$30,000s to low-$40,000s would feel market-correct. The auction closes today at 12:05 p.m. EDT.

These are refined, traditional, dress-focused pieces—exactly the kind of watches enthusiasts respect, admire, and then often expect to buy at a substantial secondary-market discount. Breguet and Blancpain have enormous horological credibility, but neither currently commands the broad, immediate resale demand of the most liquid sports-watch brands.

The likely message from bidders: the watches are excellent, but the asks were optimistic relative to what this buyer pool was willing to pay. Condition, completeness of box/papers, provenance, and the specific auction audience can move the result, but a 54–58% gap is large enough to indicate that the market—not merely one hesitant bidder—was disagreeing with the pricing.

Today’s Big Losers at Auction on Grailzee

At opposite ends of the price universe, these two watches managed to deliver the same message: the consignors’ expectations were a little ahead of the room.

The 2026 Christopher Ward The Twelve, offered at $2,500, topped out at $1,250—exactly 50% below ask. For a relatively accessible steel sports watch, the bidders essentially said, “Nice watch; we’ll take two for the price of one.” Besides, the ask is nearly $1,000 above the list price shown on their website.

Meanwhile, the 2020 A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Chronograph carried a $63,495 ask and reached $35,100. That is a $28,395 shortfall, or 44.7% below ask. The dollar gap is enormous—enough to buy a small collection of Christopher Wards—but percentage-wise it missed by slightly less than the Twelve.

The takeaway: price tier did not save either seller. The Christopher Ward was rejected at the everyday-enthusiast end of the market, while the Lange was rejected in the rarefied air of high horology. Both asks appear to have been set meaningfully above what the auction audience was prepared to pay, with the Lange showing that even exceptional watches are not exempt from gravity when reserve expectations get ambitious.

Fears’ investment in making and servicing more watches at home is the kind of slow, durable work that often matters more than a splashy release. In a market that constantly measures resale, it is worth remembering that the best brands are still building for the next repair, the next decade and the next owner.

Time Graphing Today’s Watch Universe

The most interesting thread running through today’s watch news is not a new material, complication or color. It is the growing distance between what the industry is good at making and what the market is prepared to value. Watches are increasingly rich in technical content, historical reference and human effort. But those qualities do not arrive at the checkout counter—or the auction block—with equal force. The difference between craft and liquidity has rarely been more visible.

Start with Chopard’s UK results. A 7% decline in sales is not, by itself, a referendum on a brand with Chopard’s stature or depth. But it illustrates the pressure facing even the most established luxury houses: a global boutique footprint, celebrated events, a recognizable jewelry business and a serious watchmaking offering do not remove the need to continually earn the customer’s attention. Luxury is not simply a product category; it is an act of belief. Buyers have to believe the object is special, the brand is relevant and the purchase will still feel meaningful once the launch campaign has moved on.

That is why Fears’ new Bristol workshop matters. It is easy to overuse the phrase “in-house” until it becomes a vague marker of legitimacy. But bringing assembly, servicing and quality control together is not just about a line in a press release. It is about taking responsibility for the watch after it leaves the factory. It is about knowing how the product is built, how it ages and how it can be maintained. For a small brand, that kind of investment is expensive, patient and not especially glamorous—which is precisely why it deserves attention. It signals an ambition to be around for the second owner, the first service and the next generation of the company.

The independents in today’s issue reveal different ways of building that belief. Konstantin Chaykin has made originality his operating system. His work is technically formidable, but its real strength is that it cannot be mistaken for anybody else’s. In an industry where familiarity often functions as a shortcut to value, Chaykin has built recognition through surprise. The Joker watches, the ambitious clocks and the ultra-thin experiments are not merely products; they are arguments for a more playful, authored form of haute horlogerie.

Moriz Grossmann’s Tefnut takes a quieter route. Its appeal is not speed, spectacle or viral recognizability. It is the survival of a process: a nineteenth-century silver-plating technique, a carefully finished hand-wound movement and a 36 mm format that asks the collector to look more closely rather than simply look bigger. The Watch Ho & Co. x Selten Yum Cha adds another layer. Here the value proposition is not just enamel, engraving or a limited run. It is cultural memory made physical—the bamboo steamer, the dim sum table, the founder’s family story. These watches succeed when the owner sees them as more than specifications competing for space on a spreadsheet.

And yet, the market has its own language. The Christophe Claret Kantharos result is a sharp reminder that rarity, cost of manufacture and mechanical originality do not necessarily equal immediate resale strength. The watch is extraordinary in the literal sense: a large, complicated monopusher chronograph with a striking mechanism from one of modern independent watchmaking’s most technically distinctive names. But it occupies a difficult part of the collector landscape. It asks the buyer to know what Christophe Claret is, to understand why the mechanics matter and to be comfortable owning something that may not have a deep secondary market when it is time to move on. The $16,750 bid that failed to meet reserve does not erase the Kantharos’s achievement. It measures the gap between admiration and demand.

Today’s white-gold, smoked-blue Royal Oak chronograph presents the inverse case. Its complication is excellent, its Calibre 4401 is modern and capable, and its white-gold execution is genuinely luxurious. But it also benefits from something the Kantharos does not: immediate legibility. The Royal Oak’s shape, bracelet and brand name give the buyer a familiar frame of reference before the details are even considered. Its value is easier to explain at a dinner table, easier to compare online and easier to imagine selling. The market rewards that clarity handsomely.

None of this means collectors should only buy familiar icons, nor that challenging independents deserve a sympathy premium. It means the most compelling watches increasingly require a more intentional kind of collecting. Ask what makes the object singular. Ask whether the maker has built the service, distribution and trust that can support it. Ask whether the story is embedded in the watch itself or merely attached to its launch. And ask whether you are buying a watch because the market has already agreed on its value—or because you have taken the time to form a view of your own.

The healthiest watch universe has room for both. It needs the Royal Oak as a common language and the Kantharos as a private discovery. It needs big brands with the resources to refine a known formula, and smaller makers willing to risk making something no one has requested yet. But the watches most likely to reward us over time may be the ones that turn attention into understanding.

The 45 mm rose-gold and titanium Kantharos is a monopusher chronograph with a striking mechanism—a genuinely unusual proposition from a maker whose watches reward knowledgeable collectors more than casual brand recognition. Public results for the exact MTR.MBA13.901 are scarce; the last readily identifiable auction record is a Sotheby’s Hong Kong sale in 2020 with an undisclosed result, while full-set dealer offerings have been removed in the roughly $45,000–$50,000 range. The $16,750 bid therefore reads less like a verdict on the watch’s engineering than a sharp illustration of the liquidity discount that can attach to even exceptional independent complications.

A White-Gold Royal Oak Faces Its First Real Market Test

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph ref. 26240BC.OO.1320BC.04 closes today at 12:00 p.m. EDT. Introduced in 2025, the 41 mm model combines a solid white-gold case and bracelet with a smoked-blue Grande Tapisserie dial, giving the familiar Royal Oak chronograph a more discreetly extravagant character. Its in-house Calibre 4401 supplies a flyback chronograph, column wheel, 70-hour power reserve and sapphire-display back—substantial modern credentials beneath a design that needs little introduction.

Condition should help. This example includes box and papers, retains all pictured links and is described as excellent across the dial, hands and crystal, with only minor wear to the case, bezel and bracelet. For a heavy white-gold Royal Oak, completeness and bracelet condition matter materially: replacing links is costly, and the original integrated bracelet is central to both the wearing experience and the collector value.

The original U.S. retail price was $93,400, while current dealer asks for comparable full-set examples have generally clustered from roughly $116,000 into the $140,000s. There is not yet a widely reported public auction result for this exact 222-piece reference, making today’s close especially useful as a real-time value marker rather than a routine sale. A disciplined result around retail to the low six figures would acknowledge the model’s scarcity and precious-metal construction without confusing dealer aspirations for settled market value; a materially stronger result would signal that collectors are assigning a genuine premium to this particular smoked-blue, white-gold configuration.

Today’s Big Losers at Auction on Grailzee

Two failed sales, two fairly emphatic messages from the market.

The 2026 Tudor Black Bay Chrono Carbon “Racing Bulls” was offered at $9,000 and topped out at $6,500—a $2,500 shortfall, or 27.8% below ask. Limited edition or not, bidders apparently decided the racing pedigree did not come with a mandatory pit-stop premium.

The Patek Philippe 3940R had an even rougher landing. With an $84,700 ask and a $45,100 high bid, it missed by $39,600—46.8% below ask. That is less “negotiation gap” and more “the market has submitted a counterproposal in a different zip code.”

Conclusion: both reserves were set above demonstrated demand, but the Patek was especially optimistic. The Tudor’s gap suggests a pricing adjustment could bring it within reach of a deal; the Patek likely needs a much more serious reserve reset, stronger provenance/condition justification, or more patient placement with the right collector.

Time Graphing: Today’s Watch Universe

Watchmaking has always had ways of telling us what deserves attention. A Geneva Seal on a movement, a chronometer certificate on a dial, a prize in Geneva, a record at auction, a waiting list at a boutique—each is a kind of signal. The trouble is that signals are not the same thing as substance.

That distinction feels especially timely today. Seiko’s powerful financial performance is not the result of one clever badge or one viral release. It reflects years of sharpening a broad portfolio: Grand Seiko pushing further into luxury, Prospex keeping technical watchmaking accessible, Presage building design-led appeal, and Seiko 5 remaining a gateway for new enthusiasts. The company’s success is a reminder that scale does not automatically mean sameness. When a brand has a coherent point of view and delivers it at multiple price levels, growth can be a measure of real cultural relevance.

The independent side of the business offers the inverse lesson. Our look at the five pillars of independent watchmakingis ultimately about why the best independents matter beyond their scarcity. Philippe Dufour, François-Paul Journe, Kari Voutilainen, Roger W. Smith and Rexhep Rexhepi are not simply making fewer watches than the great maisons. Arnold & Son remains an unusually inventive brand with a deep chronometry narrative, and the bidding shows there is real interest; it also shows that rarity and a platinum case alone do not establish a liquid market.

The Christophe Claret Kantharos: A Rare Chance to Buy a Chiming Chronograph for Less Than Its Story Deserves

Today’s Christophe Claret Kantharos is even more unusual. Introduced in 2013, the 45mm rose-gold and titanium monopusher chronograph is powered by Claret’s self-winding MBA13 calibre, a 558-component movement with 75 jewels, a constant-force mechanism and a 48-hour power reserve. Its defining trick is also a genuinely useful piece of mechanical theater: a cathedral gong sounds every time the chronograph is started, stopped or reset. Christophe Claret spent decades making complex movements for other major maisons before putting his own name on the dial, and the Kantharos captures exactly what makes that history meaningful—a technically ambitious, in-house creation that few larger brands would risk producing.

Original pricing for comparable Kantharos models sat well into six figures, while recent dealer offerings for complete examples have clustered around the mid-$40,000s to just under $50,000. This watch’s box, papers and excellent dial, hands and crystal make it a strong candidate for a result in that territory, although the limited pool of buyers for a large, highly technical independent watch could keep the hammer lower. For the collector who values uncommon mechanics over familiar branding, it represents one of the more compelling opportunities in today’s market. The auction closes at 8:10 PM EDT tonight.

Today’s Big Losers at Auction on Grailzee

1. The Ulysse Nardin Freak market delivered two fairly emphatic “thanks, but no thanks” moments.

   • The 2019 Freak Cruiser (left) was offered at $43,500 but topped out at $23,000—a $20,500 shortfall, or 47.1% below ask. Nearly half off, which is less a negotiation and more the market gently relocating the decimal point.

   • The 2026 Freak X Gumball 3000 Edition 2 (right) was even further from home: a $32,000 ask attracted a $14,700 high bid, leaving a $17,300 gap, or 54.1% below ask. The bidder effectively suggested the watch was worth a little under half its proposed price—and then went about their day.

   Conclusion: both reserves appear detached from current buyer appetite, with the Gumball edition facing the steeper reality check. Even limited-edition Freaks need pricing that reflects actual demand; rarity alone does not make a reserve persuasive.

That same tension runs through the week’s new watches. The Fears jump hour, a Baume & Mercier collection conceived for women, and Unimatic’s hard-edged Prodiver all make distinct propositions rather than chasing a single consensus. Even the broader conversation around quiet luxury in watches is less about making everything discreet than about making a choice that feels legible to its owner. A Rolex on a NATO, as explored in this case for taking it off the bracelet, may say more about a collector than the same Rolex worn exactly as it left the boutique.

And then there is the market, which is rarely sentimental for long. Friday’s Hublot result and tonight’s Arnold & Son sale are reminders that rarity, complication, platinum, and an artist collaboration do not automatically become liquidity. The collector’s opportunity is to separate an object’s intrinsic interest from the crowd’s willingness to pay for it at a particular moment. Recent dealer asks have been well above the level a disciplined buyer should treat as a result. A sensible auction outcome would likely sit in the mid-five figures, with roughly $35,000 to $45,000 representing a strong value zone for the buyer; a materially higher result would show that the combination of platinum, thin tourbillon engineering, and a 28-piece run has found the right room.
